not enough small businesses online!

December 13, 2018

It’s estimated that only around half of NZ’s small businesses have a website.

In today’s online-dominated business world, that’s far too few — businesses not online are missing out on many opportunities.

A website is a 24/7 advertisement / shopfront to the world. They’re inexpensive to run and, for a basic small business site, inexpensive to build.

Rushed as small business owners are just operating their businesses day-to-day, putting up a website or some sort of online presence should be a priority.

So: it was pleasing to see two more small Kiwi businesses getting their shopfronts online this month:

  • Sean Turner Design — an architectural designer in Levin
  • Angela Robertson — a people and organisational development specialist

And good to see Mighty Atom Marketing helping them get there.

on cooking eggs, media firestorms and Twitter f-bombs

August 21, 2015

I’ve always had trouble cooking a poached egg: keeping its shape, stopping it sticking, fishing it out of the water — this week a recipe promising me the perfect poached egg (hallelujah!) appeared.

Celebrity Millie Elder-Holmes runs a blog that gives her take on health and eating and sells jewellery. The top recipe post was for poaching an egg.

Why was I there? It’s an expletive-filled tale.

when great customer service becomes great PR

June 24, 2015

I came face to face with amazing customer service at 3am on the weekend.

Ok, you may be thinking, what sort of customer service does any person need in the wee small hours?

Well, to be accurate, the 3am was in Bulgaria. At my place, it was lunchtime Saturday, and I was struggling with a dead-to-the-world website.

we’re mobile responsive now, did you make Google’s deadline?

April 23, 2015

This site is mobile responsive now and so is its sister site www.technical-writer.co.nz.

We made the upgrades in response to Google advising that mobile friendly sites would benefit from changes to its search algorithms released yesterday. If your site is not mobile responsive, it will still rank the same in desktop and laptop searches, but will suffer when people search from mobile devices.

what my dog taught me about first impressions

July 2, 2014

You may have met Luna, my furry-faced pup, in my previous post. Those whiskers seem to be an instant ice-breaker with pretty much everyone, and she’s very affectionate towards any person or dog. This is, of course, a positive thing because she’ll need all the social advantages she can get to counter any intimidation she instils with her high-energy German Pointer nature.

So far so good then, but her name often causes comment, which surprises me.  [Read more…] about what my dog taught me about first impressions
